Meet Tom Heflin
With over 44 years’ experience in civil litigation, Tom Heflin brings his abilities and skills to each mediation engagement. His legal knowledge, and his ability to communicate and to build relationships with all counterparts have been guiding forces throughout his career.
Following graduation from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1979, Tom served as a Law Clerk with the Honorable J. Foy Guin, Jr., U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Alabama, and then as a clerk for for a Solicitor’s firm in London England.
In 1981, Tom returned to his hometown of Tuscumbia, Alabama as a general practitioner of law. In 1984, he joined the Birmingham, Alabama law firm of Hare, Wynn, Newell, and Newton, where he represented both individuals and businesses in complex civil disputes.
For the past 38 years, Tom has practiced law in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and the Shoals Area of Northwest Alabama. Civil law has been the primary focus of his career. However, as a “small town lawyer”, Tom has achieved success in a wide variety of legal areas, including: the representation of local government agencies and municipalities as well as teachers, and local individuals and businesses. He has represented clients in the capacity of both plaintiff and defense counsel.

Tom believes that ongoing training is critical to the continuous improvement of an attorney’s skills. To this end, he has remained current with ongoing legal developments, while also completing extensive training in well-recognized mediation training programs. He is also an avid reader of negotiation publications. Tom is committed to life-long learning as a key attribute for a successful mediator.
Tom’s commitment to assist and help others is reflected in his years of involvement with legal, civic, and charitable causes. He has served on a number of local and statewide boards in his capacity as an attorney, as well as serving on boards of numerous civic, charitable and religious organizations throughout the state.
Tom’s dedication to bringing people together has been a hallmark of his successful career as an attorney and as a civic leader and participating citizen. He brings that same dedication to the responsibility of the mediation process.
